Why is The Catcher in the Rye BANNED?

My reasoning on why this book is banned is because of  the language, vulgarity, racism, sexual phrases, and many other things.  I can really see how this book is banned because i can see parents really not wanting their children to be hearing and reading about some of the things in this book.  There is a lot of swearing in the book, and it kind of gets a bit excessive! And the vulgarity towards women is another thing that can really bother people.  They may find it very innapropriate, also very offensive.  A lot of things said in this book i feel like they could be misunderstood and taken the wrong way.  Those who choose to read this book obviously see this book as something other then all the reasons why it is banned, they see through all of that!

  1. I have to agree, like you said the profanity and vulgar language toward women through the book really play a big part of why the book is banned. Parents don't want their children reading something like this, little lone in schools. Great job!!!

  2. Alli, it is acceptable to take either view point in the argument. I am glad that you decided to speak so candidly about this issue and how you feel, but you should still apply the basic principles of a solid argument that we discussed in class.
You mentioned vulgarity, racism, and sexual phrases. Considering those issues, what would be the specific argument made by those that think this book shouldn't be banned? Then, use specific scenes from the book as supporting evidence for you point of view and as harmful to the opposing point of view.
Both James and Alli - you're right that all those reasons were cited for banning the book, but if you agree with them, I still encourage you to examine the merits of the opposing view. By doing this, you get a better grasp on what you believe and are then able to craft a stronger argument.
