Passing judgement can be really hurtful to others. Passing judgement means that you judge someone before you even know them. You may judge someone so fast that without knowing you could have been great friends. But instead of getting to know them first before judging them, you just ruined the chance of ever really even getting to know them. For example, you could be sitting in a doctors office one day just waiting. Suddenly, some guy walks in the door and you automatically can tell that this guy is obviously gay. There is only one seat left in the waiting room and that is where he sits. You get mad and automatically judge him because of his choice of life style. Not even knowing this guy, you judge him right off the bat. Things like this shouldnt happen. What if it was you in these situations and you were judged right away about the way you looked or the way you acted. Would you like it? Probably not. So you obviously shouldnt be going around judging people before getting to know them if you wouldnt want that to happen to you. If it would hurt your feelings, then it would most definitely hurt someone elses feelings. So with everything here put together. Passing Judgement could really effect Holden by him feeling bad about himself thinking that he's always being judged. Always thinking that he isn't being given a chance. It could possibly be a big part of why he doesnt like Pency very much is because of the fakeness he see's in people. He has a false perception of others because their judging him so they dont give him a chance. The first chapter of Catcher and the Rye talks a lot about the grief he has built up and he is just now really expressing it and letting everything out for anyone to hear.

you have some interesting points but isn't possible that Holden is passing judgment on every one else just like you suggest they criticize him? and even if he is feeling bad about himself shouldn't he be less passive about some of the events in the first three chapters, for instance when he left the equipment on the subway and rather then feel upset about his teams anger and letting them down he found the situation amusing. still good job on showcasing the negative effects of snap judgments:)
ReplyDeleteThough you do make a good point Jordan I would have to say he has the right to pass some judgment on people even if they WEREN'T judging him. And we all can laugh and find stupid things we have done amusing, isn't that how we can deal with difficult things in our life? I think we all laugh at ourselves quite a bit actually for screwing up.
